Voices Unheard Blog Series

Prayers For Thousand Oaks, CA

In lieu of today’s planned blog post (part III of The Voices Unheard Series), I have decided to instead take time to give condolences, send prayers & love, to the families impacted by the shooting massacre that has taken place. I would also like to share my feelings on this tragic event.

My hands shake as I write this post sitting on my college campus, looking around at students with their headphones in, faces glued to phones, looking as if they don’t have a care in the world. I can even hear the speaking coming from Chapel service. I won’t lie, I feel paranoid & unsettled.

According to my GPS, 1 hour and about 15 minutes is what separates me from the city of Thousand Oaks, CA. I don’t watch the news, so when this event originally happened I was unaware. Originally I heard about this massacre from both my mom and one of my really good friends. My friend texted me to make sure I was okay, due to being unsure where I was during the shooting. Her texting me to make sure I was okay and my talk with my mother this morning about the shooting, hit me hard. So I decided to dig deeper to see what others are saying took place .

Marine Vet to mass shooter was part of a title of the article at the top of my screen. I clicked it. After I read that I continued clicking articles and seeing tweets about this event. As I read articles & tweets I became very disgusted and angry. ANGRY AT GUNS but also ANGRY AT PEOPLE who decide to use GUNS to take INNOCENT LIVES.

Gun violence is OUT OF CONTROL, and it seems we are doing nothing about it besides sending “prayers, condolences, and love,” AFTER massacres like this have occured. I never imagined I would see a “time” where such evil was present in people, where such hatred was present, a time where people continue to take INNOCENT LIVES with GUNS.  When will these evil occurrences STOP?

According to American Public Health Association (APHA), “GUN VIOLENCE is a leading cause of premature death in the United States (U.S.). Guns kill more than 38,000 people and cause nearly 85,000 injuries each year.” Though I am no expert and there is so much I don’t know, what I do know is we must fight to #stopgunviolence. Susan Orfanos (one of the mothers of the victims) stated ” I don’t want prayers. I don’t want thoughts. I want gun control. I hope to God nobody else sends me any more prayers. I want gun control.”

The thing I wonder is even with “gun control,” can we ever completely prevent massacres like this from happening ? If so, how ?

We may be able to control guns, but we can’t control the actions of other human beings.

Every single one of us has a choice to give live with our words & actions, or do just the opposite. Which one will you choose ? Maybe it’s not the GUN, it’s the actions HUMAN BEINGS ARE CHOOSING? Or maybe the problem is lack of GUN control ? Can we solely put the blame on the “tool” aka The GUN? And should we take a closer look at the human beings who have/own/are purchasing these GUNS?😓

What can we really say…. I can’t even begin to imagine the pain or other emotions the victim’s families are feeling. Innocent people freaking lost their lives. Families lost their loved ones. This massacre & all the others that have taken place are TRAGIC. Though, I didn’t know any of the victims who lost their life, I am deeply saddened and disgusted by this massacre.

Sending Love,

Nat.
